Tell us about your role at Wood

I was offered a 3-year apprenticeship to gain an NVQ 3 in moving loads followed by a HNC in Mechanical Engineering. This gave me a comprehensive understanding of the forces that are applied throughout the lift. With this knowledge I wanted to plan and coordinate lifts, so I completed my appointed person course to allow me to take on a supervisor role.

I joined Wood in 2017 as the appointed person and rigging supervisor on a maintenance contract. My role consists of planning lifts and overseeing a team of riggers. I’ve introduced a number of improvements including a new lift plan system and updating procedures.

When you reflect on your career at Wood what makes you most proud?

Although I have only been with Wood a short time, I have gained the respect of my colleagues and the workforce but also the customer at all levels. In the time I have been employed, the rigging workforce have been 100% accident and incident free which is a significant achievement and something that really attracted me to join the team at Wood.

What would you tell your friends about working at Wood?

Wood is a great company to work for as they provide lots of training opportunities. Whenever I have required training for myself or my team it has been supplied. In my role I am trusted to work autonomously and can make changes efficiently. There is no doubt that safety is the highest priority.

Outside of work what drives you?

I have a young family, so it is important to me that I spend as much time with them as possible. To see them grow and to be a good role model is a high priority for me and I’m very grateful to Wood for allowing me to do this. Aside from my family, I am a keen cyclist and over the past few years I have taken up triathlons which takes up a lot of my early mornings before work, either running or in the pool.

I’m really passionate about the lifting industry, I am a member of various online lifting sites which keep me up to date on new equipment and techniques of lifting, along with all the heavy lifts going on around the world.
